The Future for Ukraine charitable foundation continues to help Ukrainian military personnel receive high-quality prosthetics that will help them rebuild their lives. Currently, three brave Ukrainian defenders are in Washington: Dmytro Sklyarenko, Oleksandr Drobatyuk, and Serhii Dudik, until January 13. They arrived on December 12 and are already mastering their new prostheses at the Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics (MCOP). Oleksandr Chaika received a prosthesis here a little earlier.
Dmytro Sklyarenko came under artillery shelling near Severodonetsk. A shell exploded next to him, causing Dmytro to lose his leg. On the brink of life and death, Dmytro was evacuated to Lysychansk, where he spent some time in intensive care due to heavy blood loss. In total, the soldier survived more than 15 operations.
Oleksandr Drobatyuk was wounded by mortar shelling in the Mykolaiv region. The military man tried to provide himself with first aid but failed. His comrades carried him more than 7 km to the evacuation zone in absolute darkness and under continuous fire. Oleksandr lost a leg and two fingers of his right hand.
Serhiy Dudik was in positions near the village of Bilogorivka, Luhansk region when the enemy’s offensive began with heavy artillery fire from Grad. While reloading the weapon, he noticed that something was wrong with his arm, and it was not working well. Due to the incessant shelling that comes with enemy aircraft, the soldier could not quickly receive the necessary medical assistance. Therefore, the blood began to clot, and by the time the medics arrived, the hand had already darkened and had to be amputated.
These days, our heroes gave an interview to the authoritative online edition of Voice of America. Other military personnel who received prosthetics at MCOP thanks to funding from the clinic’s owner Michael Corcoran, also were present during the conversation with journalists. Currently, Washington is thinking about how to ensure the continuation of the Operation renew prosthetics program for our military. In particular, according to US Senator from Illinois Tammy Duckworth, the Ukrainian military should receive the same high-quality prostheses as American soldiers, so she will continue to support the program. Ms. Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Oksana Markarova and military attache Borys Kremenetskyi also supported the boys and expressed gratitude to the team of the Future for Ukraine foundation for its work in the field of prosthetics for the military.
American partners — the Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics (MCOP) — are ready to cover all medical expenses for prostheses and the rehabilitation process of patients. The Future for Ukraine foundation covers the costs of insurance, transfers and flights, accommodation, and meals. Help meet these needs was possible at the expense of the funds accumulated as part of the open collection on the foundation’s website.
Dmytro Sklyarenko and Oleksandr Drobatyuk took the long-awaited first steps and mastered walking with prostheses. Serhiy Dudik received a prosthetic arm and is relearning how to perform usual movements with the help of special exercises. The Future for Ukraine foundation says that the smiles that have returned to the faces of Ukrainian heroes are the best reward for the team’s daily work.
Thanks to a benefactor, tax attorney, and MCOP patient Chris Allen, Dmytro Sklyarenko received, in addition to his prosthesis, a bionic Power Knee of the latest generation produced by Össur. So Dmytro’s prosthesis will be even more perfect! The philanthropist also has a leg amputee and is a direct tester of such modern prosthetics.
We will remind you that Oleksandr Chaika became the first patient who received the necessary help within the framework of the Prosthetics for Military program from the Future for Ukraine foundation. The foundation accompanied the soldier during the prosthetics and rehabilitation processes in the USA, taking over all organizational and legal issues and expenses. Oleksandr Chaika was severely wounded on the front line — a mine-explosive injury with a gunshot fracture of the right femur. The soldier’s leg could not be saved from the fact that gangrene had set in, and the limb had to be completely amputated. Before the full-scale invasion of russia, Oleksandr taught children acrobatics and choreography.
The Future for Ukraine Fund, within the framework of the “Military Prosthetics” case, covers the costs of insurance, transfer and flights, accommodation, and meals of the Ukrainian military. The foundation is currently collecting for the Ukrainian military, who will next go to Malta in January to undergo the process of prosthetics and rehabilitation. You can support the collection here “Prosthetics for the military in Malta”.
